Working, Learning, Living at Home: How to Navigate, Transform, Appreciate

11/2/2020

This year has brought about unimaginable changes in how we work, learn and live.  So much of our daily existence -- whether as individuals or as members of a family, student, professional or social cohort -- is happening inside our homes.  For too many of us, a stable home is not a certainty. For those fortunate to have a safe home during this health and economic crisis, we've been made even more aware of how important our dwellings are to us.

And as our appreciation of our homes increases, so do our requirements.  Finding ways to create separate spaces to concentrate on learning, work, socializing or solitude, while harmoniously living together is hard.
  • Consider inexpensive or DIY room dividers for carving out distinct zones or spaces, or simply to hide clutter at the end of the day.
  • Perhaps you have a closet that can be converted into a study area or mini office, relegating its contents to empty suitcases or storage bins. One client created a recording studio out her bedroom closet.
  • Rearrange a space to create a reading nook with a favorite armchair, floor lamp and small side table.

Home can bring serenity and well-being to our soul or spirit. As we navigate the myriad circumstances making our lives more difficult, let’s remember the many ways adversity stretches our imagination, resolve and resourcefulness. And during this time of extended home-stays, let us also remember to be thankful for all the joy our homes offer us.

Five easy ways to refresh your home for Spring!

4/29/2019

Ah…Spring! It’s a season for new beginnings. Trees sprout new leaves, flowers start to bloom, the air feels fresh and the sun shines a bit brighter. We’ve made it through another winter - whew!
With that comes the inevitable desire to freshen up our homes. To make them light and bright - just like spring. Here are five simple ways to refresh your space that are easy and inexpensive and will bring your home from winter drab to spring fresh!

1. Switch your drapes or curtains
If you live in an older home it’s not unusual to hang heavier drapes for winter to help keep the house warm. Or you may have brocade, embroidered satin or velvet drapes that work well for fall and winter decor. Think about swapping them out for something lighter. Linens, cotton and cotton blend panels are a perfect choice. If you have a lot of solid color furniture, choose curtains that have a pattern. It’s an easy way to complement your existing pieces and add contrast - which is so important in decorating a space.

2. Accent Pillows and Throws
Pillows are one of the least expensive and easy ways to change the look of a room. Switching out heavy fabric pillows for ones made of lighter fabrics can make a big difference in your space. Use your existing inserts and cover them in new pillow covers. The same theory applies to throws. Swap out heavy knit or woven throws for lighter, pashmina style throws. You will be amazed at the difference!

3 Area Rugs
It’s a good idea to have your area rugs professionally cleaned after winter. If you use darker color area rugs for winter, try bringing in some lighter, patterned or natural textured rugs that will take you into spring and summer. Remember to get a new welcome mat for your front door. Welcome Spring!

4. Low or No Cost Decorating
One of the things I love to do is shop in my own home. Switching accent chairs, side tables, coffee tables, console tables, mirrors and artwork to different rooms can make rooms look brand new. Most of us tend to put up art work or photos and leave them there forever. A great way to update your space is to move art work from around your home into different spaces. The piece will look new again and you might even notice something in the art you never noticed before.
If you have family photos in frames scattered throughout the house, why not create a family photo gallery wall? Use similar frame types (metal, wood) or frame colors to unify the gallery.  You’ll love the installation and it will have major impact in the space.

5. Refresh Your Bedroom
Don’t forget to freshen up your bedroom. A lightweight quilt or blanket, lighter color bedding, new sleeping pillows, accent pillows and curtain panels will lift your spirits and encourage restful sleep.
